Earliest meeting: Tuesday 10th April 1849
Final meeting: Tuesday 10th April 1849
The Dumfries and Galloway town of Sanquhar lies on the River Nith and has two claims to fame, the first being the smallest, and possibly oldest, Post Office in the World and the second is the famous Sanquhar Castle. Back in the middle of the 19th century the town held its own race meeting on Tuesday 10th April 1849, the card starting with a heavyweight race with each horse carrying 12st. It was won by Mr Hunter’s Tippitywitchet from Irishman, while the later Lightweight Sweepstake saw Irishman gain his revenge, defeating Lancer and Tippitywitchet. There is no further evidence of a meeting taking place in the town.
